Sally Earns Her Wings

Sally sets out to build her own real flying airplane, so she'll have the experience to help The Boss finish the Nieuport II. She chooses a small balsa glider, the Starfire, and gets to work. (Tommy also builds his first airplane, a Jetfire. Click here for that story.)

"Easy to fly" -- that sounds good! Hmm... better study the directions carefully. Looks pretty straightforward. Breaking out the balsa pieces is easy.

Everything fits nicely. I'll use a bit of glue... for the experience, and to keep things together in case of an "off-airport ground contact". Sliding the wing on is the toughest job.

Done! What a sweet little airplane! Glad I've been working out! Now for the real test... Ready. Steady. Go! Whooopee! Do you see that? It's really flying!

The Starfire glides to a beautiful landing on the lawn below, and after several more successful flights, Sally donates it to JJ for her enjoyment. Now it's time to get on with the biplane project!
