Outline the shape of the arm onto the blank. The straight lines are proportion lines that are drawn clear around the blank so that the upper arm, forearm and hand are of equal size on each finished arm. |
I sketch the shape of the hand onto the side of the blank, also. This will disappear as you carve the blank, but can be used as a reference until it disappears. |

Carve out the rough shape of the arm. |
Carve the angle of the palm. |
Mark the hand and thumb onto the blank. |
Using your *sharp* blade, cut out tiny chips from the space between the thumb and the hand. If the chips are too large you can accidently break off the thumb. |
Another tiny cut being made on the hand side of the blank. |
Using the tip of the knife, work the chips free from between the thumb and the hand. |
Use lots of tiny cuts. |
Carve out the curve of the palm, leaving the ridge of the thumb standing. |
The inside of the hand. |
There is now a little channel between the thumb and the hand. |
Use sandpaper to emphasize the channel. |
Here are the inside and outside of the carved hand. The thumb is not freestanding and will not be fragile while still giving the clear idea of the thumb. |
